Abstract

This documentary delves into the pervasive impact of racism within the German prison system, unfolding through the compelling narrative of Ahmad, a young Syrian refugee sentenced to five and a half years upon his arrival. The project originated in the filmmaker’s third semester, driven by a fervent desire to illuminate Ahmad’s experiences. Initial hesitations arose due to Ahmad’s incarceration, necessitating
extensive efforts to secure permissions for prison visits and filming.
While colleagues raised concerns about project feasibility within academic timelines, the filmmaker temporarily set aside the idea. However, as graduation approached, a renewed commitment emerged, coinciding with Ahmad’s release from prison, reshaping the project’s vision. Ahmad’s willingness to share his prison experiences became the film’s cornerstone, propelled by the filmmaker’s encouragement during prison visits. This shared commitment fueled the filmmaker’s motivation to achieve what initially seemed unattainable. The documentary follows Ahmad’s journey – from seeking asylum in Germany to a
lengthy prison sentence. It unveils Ahmad’s struggle for survival behind bars and explores the challenges he faces post-release: the quest for social integration, career prospects, and the constant fear of deportation.
